ANNUAL STATISTICS

WOODTURNING PROCESS

1. COLLECTING MATERIAL & SEASONING

The timber used is either exotic or native. Of course native timbers, such as olive wood, mastic tree (sxinos), beech and oak are preferred. The collected timber is stored in a cool area and painted in the ends, in order to dry and achieve equilibrium with its intended final home. Otherwise, large internal stresses and surface cracking may occur.

2. DESIGN

A rough dimensioned sketch is made at first. Once the proportions and dimensions are decided, the final design gets formed.

3. PREPARING

This stage concerns the planning of the whole process. The material is selected, as well as the methods and tools to be used. The blank takes its first shape.

4. WOODTURNING

The main part of the process is the woodturning. With the use of the appropriate gouges, the blank takes the desirable shape. Sometimes, for example in case of a bowl, the product after being roughly turned, has to be stored again for a few weeks or months and then re-mounted on the lathe and finish turned.

5. SANDING

Sanding is the last wood-removal procedure which gives the wood a smooth appearance. The procedure contains several steps, starting with a coarse sandpaper and finishing with an extra fine one.

6. FINISHING

In this final stage of the process, a finish is applied (varying from a lacquer to beeswax and olive oil) in order to protect the wood and bring out its natural beauty.
